If one thinks about it, one will realize that there are some fractions which are really close to the square root of 2. Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as a fraction. Irrationals are the opposite. They are numbers that are not fractions. Why is the square root of 2 irrational? First, one should compare the square root of 2 to a number very close to it.
